The Controversy Behind Chicago's Diploma Mandate for The Atlantic by Kristen Norman

I worked on this story over the summer for the education section of The Atlantic. Chicago mayor, Rahm Emanuel, recently laid down a mandate stating that all senior in high school must have a destination after graduating to receive their diplomas. It's an interesting idea and I enjoyed being able to visit several schools over the few days spent I photographing this story. Huge thanks to Emily Jan for assigning me and shout out to Women Photograph for being an excellent tool for editors to find hardworking freelancers! Here are a few of my favorite images and you can check out the story here. Thanks for looking!

Young Radicals by Kristen Norman

This past February I was asked to shoot the author photo for Jermey McCarter's new book, Young Radicals, which was released last week by Random House. Jeremy is the co-author with Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton: The Revolution. He's an extremely talented writer and you should check out his work!

School Uniforms & Education Policy for RACKED/VICE Media by Kristen Norman

Recently, I worked on a story for Racked/Vice Media on the role of school uniforms and education policy in America. I spent some time in the Austin neighborhood at BUILD, an after school program for kids in the neighborhood. It's a great long read, check it out when you have time here.

"A school uniform can be battle armor. It can also be an invisibility cloak, protecting against bullying. Or it can become a flashing target."
